On behalf of Chief Paul R. Toussaint, the Rochester Police Department releases the following:
On the afternoon of July 12 at about 4:56 PM, Frisbie EMS, the Rochester Fire Department and the Rochester Police Department responded to a motor vehicle collision on Washington St. at the intersection of Estes Rd. The investigation revealed that Jared Thomas, age 18 of Barrington, was eastbound in his 2004 Chevrolet Malibu on Washington St. when he encountered a vehicle beginning to enter the roadway from Estes Rd. He maneuvered to make a left onto Estes Rd. around this vehicle and failed to become aware of the oncoming 2002 Lexus operated by Renee Anderson, age 62 of Barrington. Anderson attempted to avoid the collision but was unable to do so and struck Thomas’ vehicle at an oblique angle. Both vehicles were significantly damaged and had to be towed from the scene.
Thomas, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time, struck his head on the windshield. His airbags did deploy at impact. He responded to a hospital on his own after the fact and was not transported by ambulance. Anderson, who was seatbelted at the time of the collision, was transported to Frisbie Memorial Hospital for non-life threatening injuries. Her passenger was also transported to Frisbie Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
This collision is still under investigation. Anyone with information regarding the truck that was present at the intersection at the time of the collision is asked to contact Ofc. Marvin at 330-7128.
The Rochester Police Department would like to remind the motoring public that air bags are only supplemental restraint devices and are designed and intended to work in conjunction with seat belts. Not wearing a seat belt can result in serious injuries or death even when an air bag does deploy.
