On behalf of Chief Paul R. Toussaint, the Rochester Police Department releases the following:
On the evening of July 13, 2018 at approximately 6:51 PM, the Rochester Police Department, Rochester Fire Department, Milton Ambulance and Frisbie EMS responded to 76 Betts Rd. for a report of a motor vehicle collision involving a residence. The Rochester Public Safety Communications Center initially received a call from a resident a short distance away reporting that the vehicle nearly struck her as she was checking her mail. Upon arrival, it was discovered that a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am, operated by Michael Gilfert, age 57 of Rochester, had lost control on Betts Rd. west of number 76 while traveling westbound. The vehicle went off the north edge of the roadway, striking a group of rocks and logs before re-entering the roadway. The vehicle swerved into the eastbound lane, nearly striking the original caller and swerved back into the westbound lane where it left the roadway a second time, striking a road sign. The vehicle re-entered the roadway again, crossed over the eastbound lane and left the road a third time, narrowly missing a utility pole. The vehicle then struck a boulder that was imbedded in the ground and was abruptly re-directed northerly where it traveled across the lawn at 76 Betts Rd. It came to a stop just short of the barn located on the property.
First responders found that neither Michael Gilfert nor his 58 year old female passenger were restrained. Gilfert was unconscious and unresponsive with head and other injuries. His passenger was awake and alert and had sustained multiple serious injuries. Both occupants had to be extricated from the vehicle by fire personnel.
Gilfert was flown to the Portsmouth Regional Hospital with serious injuries. His passenger was transported to Frisbie Memorial Hospital where she was stabilized and then transported to the Portsmouth Regional Hospital for further care.
Both alcohol and speed are factors in this collision. This collision remains under investigation and criminal charges will be forthcoming. Anyone with any further information regarding this collision is asked to contact either Ofc. Brinkman or Ofc. Turgeon at 330-7128.
