During the spring and summer months, Rochester neighborhoods have historically seen an increase in the number of thefts from vehicles, which is something we are currently experiencing this year as well. During these thefts, the perpetrator(s) typically target unlocked vehicles where valuables are visible from the outside and/or easily located inside the vehicle. These individuals generally rely on their ability to access a large number of vehicles while circulating through the neighborhood and therefore rarely force entry for fear of making noise and risking detection. These incidents typically occur during the overnight hours and are not reported until the next morning when the owner recognizes property missing or out of place.
In an effort to help prevent the residents of Rochester from becoming victims of this crime, the Rochester Police Department encourages everyone to lock their vehicles when unattended and to not leave anything of value in your vehicles, especially items visible to perpetrators.
To help lessen the likelihood of becoming a victim, lock your vehicles, remove valuables from view (money, electronic devices etc…), do not leave any prescription medications in your vehicle, and especially do not leave firearms or other weapons in an unlocked vehicle. Other actions you can take would be to park your vehicles in the garage or driveway, leave exterior residential and/or motion lights on, install outdoor surveillance/video system and report any suspicious behavior to the Rochester Police Dept during the overnight hours by calling (603) 330-7127. Tips can be reported anonymously by calling the Rochester CrimeLine at (603) 335-6500 or by texting tips to CRIMES (274637) with TEXT4CASH in the body of the text. Up to $1,000 is awarded for tips that lead to an arrest.
